BRIAN M. MULKERRIN

PRESIDENT / CO-FOUNDER

Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts into an extended construction family, Brian Mulkerrin says "building construction" is in his blood. As a child, fond memories include Sunday morning job-site visits where his dad, Michael, used to work. Being able to climb down ladders (supervised!) or watch a building demolition sparked an interest in the built environment at an early age. Before long, Brian joined rank with his family in the construction industry.

After taking a high-school elective in electronics and electrical technology, Brian began thinking about the electrical trade option. He took a job with a few large local contractors as a construction laborer, and after a few summers found himself gravitating towards the electricians on each job. With college on the horizon, Brian assumed he’d work for an electrical contractor upon graduation.

As a co-op at Wentworth, he began working for Anderson Nichols, now Dewberry Associates. He was unaware of the consulting engineering profession, but thoroughly enjoyed his introduction that turned into a career passion. Learning more with each job he took, Brian experienced how small firms operate at Zade Company, and then cut his teeth in the healthcare, science, and higher education markets at BR+A. Seven years at AKF garnered him the important soft skills related to management, operations, marketing and business development.

With more than 23 years under his belt, a board position on his firm’s executive committee, and a successful career in his wake, ambition still churned within him. Because Brian knew the industry was changing, he also knew he had a higher calling. He’d always wanted to own his own business and this juncture posed the best opportunity. With colleagues, friends, and well-respected electrical engineers, Bill Leuci and Ryan Center, e3i was born with a specific mission to bear. In a strategic move to target owner-direct and contractor relationships, e3i’s mission is to provide clients with the best possible solutions for their unique condition. Through this model, Brian, Bill and Ryan hand-pick their mechanical, plumbing and fire-protection colleagues best suited to the industry in which each client exists. It’s an arrangement they all truly enjoy.

Like any business owner, the hours are long, and the hats are varied. Yet, doing what you love shines through in every aspect of your work, and Brian truly loves what he does. Balance is key, and when’s not in his Faneuil Hall office overlooking the statue of Red Auerbach, he’s at home in Hingham with wife Katie, son Liam Michael, daughter Mary Noelle, and baby-son Lucas. And possibly watching his nephews play a game of hockey or two.
